Sonamarg Tunnel Will Boost Jammu and Kashmir’s Development, Enhance Connectivity

New Delhi/Jammu 10 January 2025 | The Sonamarg Tunnel (Z-Morh Tunnel) is set to give a major boost to development activities in Jammu and Kashmir. This tunnel is expected to be a milestone in the region’s infrastructure development. Developed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the Z-Morh Tunnel will not only improve connectivity but will also open new possibilities for trade and tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. Constructed at a cost of approximately ₹2,700 crore, this 12-kilometer long tunnel (6.4 km tunnel + 5.6 km approach road) will ensure year-round travel between Gagangir and Sonamarg. On Monday, January 13, 2025, Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally dedicate this tunnel to the nation.

Currently, Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure is heavily affected by snowstorms, avalanches, and heavy snowfall in winter, disrupting daily life. Thick layers of snow on roads and the impact on the routine of residents are common. Tourism, which plays a vital role in the region’s economy, is also affected by such weather conditions. Remember, the avalanches in February 2005 caused widespread devastation, affecting the local economy and security. However, with the newly constructed Z-Morh Tunnel, uninterrupted travel will now be possible throughout the year.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is a remarkable example of engineering. While strengthening trade, tourism, and local livelihoods, this tunnel ensures uninterrupted connectivity and strategic security in all weather conditions. The route between Srinagar and Leh is often disrupted due to poor weather, halting road traffic and affecting connectivity. Now, with the Z-Morh Tunnel (6.4 km) and the upcoming Zojila Tunnel (13.1 km), travel will bypass avalanche-prone areas and ensure safe and smooth travel in all seasons. This will not only strengthen local security but also reduce travel disruptions.

The Z-Morh Tunnel will bolster the local economy. Improved connectivity will speed up the transportation of goods and services, opening new markets for local producers and traders. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the opening of the tunnel is expected to increase trade by up to 30%. Additionally, the tourism, hospitality, and infrastructure sectors will create both direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Sonamarg’s beauty in winter is breathtaking. Covered in snow, the valley is a sight to behold. However, reaching Sonamarg in winter has always been a challenge for tourists. But now, the Z-Morh Tunnel will make it possible to reach Sonamarg year-round. This area will open up new opportunities for winter sports and adventure tourism, such as skiing and snow trekking. It will also give a boost to local handicrafts and small businesses.

The Z-Morh Tunnel will reduce travel time between Gagangir and Sonamarg. Its three-lane approach road design will allow smooth movement of both slow and fast-moving vehicles, eliminating traffic congestion. This tunnel is also significant for strategic security, as it ensures seamless access for security forces.

NHIDCL’s Sonamarg Tunnel (Z-Morh Tunnel) is a project that will not only strengthen regional connectivity but also open new opportunities for trade, tourism, and employment. This project marks a historic step in India’s infrastructure development.
