Jammu, December 23 | The Jammu and Kashmir Freedom Fighters Association (JKFFA) on Monday celebrated 130th Birth Anniversary of Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan, first Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir State and third Chief Justice of India at Dogra Shourya Sthal Amphalla, under the Chairmanship of Ved Gandotra and Vice-Chairman Rajiv Mahajan.
A large number of people including intellectuals, professionals, social activists etc attended the function.
Ved Gandotra in his address appealed the people to follow the path shown by Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan.
While paying tributes to Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan, he appreciated the contribution of Justice Mahajan as a member of Redchif Committee which played a major role in connecting J&K with rest of India through Gurdaspur.
He threw light on the contribution of Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan for which not only the people of Jammu but entire nation feel proud of him as he had worked for the welfare of the communities irrespective of caste, creed, religion and region.
Mehar Chand Mahajan was the third Chief Justice of India. His contributions for both on and off the Bench will always remain a philosophical stimulus for the legal fraternity. Law Reports are a testimony of his work as a judge. He authored many famous decisions and landmark cases. Justice Mahajan made his name as an accomplished lawyer, a respected judge, and an influential politician, he added.
Rajiv Mahajan, while paying his tributes, said that Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan has worked on various important assignments during his life, but his position as Prime Minister of J&K was a formidable challenge for him.
The biggest challenge and achievement of Mahajan’s career was during the few months that he was the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from October 15, 1947, to March 1948.
On 15th October 1947, he assumed the office of Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and in less than two weeks, on 27th October 1947, The Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir had formally acceded to India, thanks to the sincere, mature and pragmatic advice by Mahajan.
At the same time he ensured that, before the formal agreement was signed, the Government of India’s troops landed at Srinagar by the morning of the 27th and started their military operations forthwith to counter the Pakistani attack. To get the troops from India to move to Srinagar within 24 hours was an unprecedented achievement, Rajiv added.
He further said that though a pre-eminent judge and jurist, Justice Mahajan was an administrator of exceptional merit. During the communal frenzy that engulfed the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir, he maintained law and order with an extremely inadequate police force. Though the Maharaja was not willing to relieve Maharaja he was finally persuaded by Sardar Patel to let him go and Mahajan, therefore, left Kashmir at the beginning of March 1948.
Speaking on this occasion, R.C Puri, president of the association explained that Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan did not belong to Mahajan community only but represented all the communities. He said that his role as a social reformer within the community and outside would always be remembered.
Mehar Chand Mahajan sacrificed his life not only for their own community but also for the upliftment of downtrodden people of other communities.
He said that this great man is a role model for us and he will always be remembered by the people for his contributions to society and nation as a whole.
He said Mehar Chand Mahajan had played a pivotal role in accession of the State with India and the entire State feels proud of him.
Others were present on the occasion Th. Karnail Chand General Secretary, Brij Mehra Vice President, J.J Singh Secretary, R.R Raina, Surinder Chouhan and others.
